Beware of Phising!

Beware of Phising

Hackers and other unscrupulous folks are always at work devising new clever ways to steal private information from your LAUSD account and other places. Always be on the alert and never trust any message the comes from outside lausd.net or asks you to go to a non LAUSD site. Learn more...

Technology Home

Welcome to Hillside's Technology Homepage

Working together with LAUSD's Technology Plan, we are creating an educational environment that will allow our students to bring them into the "digital age." Technology is constantly changing, thus having our students up to date with the latest technology is our number one priority. We want our students to have a broad sense of how the world is changing rapidly as well as what they will face when they go out into the real world.

We stress to our students: technology is a useful tool and it should be used ethically and responsibly.

LAUSD Technology Mission Statement

The mission of the Educational Technology Services is to integrate technology in schools to assist in meeting the Superintendent's goals of making students college prepared and career ready by providing an engaging learning environment, raising student achievement, decreasing dropouts, and assuring equitable access to learning opportunities for all students.

We Are Using the Cloud

Cloud Computing

What is the Cloud

According to www.wikipedia.org:

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network (typically the Internet).

Cloud computing provides computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. Parallels to this concept can be drawn with the electricity grid, wherein end-users consume power without needing to understand the component devices or infrastructure required to provide the service.

Cloud computing is different from hosting services and assets at ISP data center. Cloud resources could reside on-premise or off-premise at service provider location. Cloud computing can take the form of public clouds, private clouds, inter-clouds, or Hybrid Clouds.

The term "cloud" is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network, and later to depict the Internet in computer network diagrams as an abstraction of the underlying infrastructure it represents.

LAUSD IT Updates

If you can't see anything above for the twitter updates it is because our campus (LAUSD) internet network is sending a lot of requests to the internet (we share a connection with all the LAUSD schools--this is called a proxy connection). Because of this type of sharing, twitter thinks we are a robot! :(

The updates should be able to be seen from home or anywhere else though! :)

Interesting Server names :)

We have an interesting naming system for our campus servers, we decided to name them after some treats :)

Current Server Names

(Linux Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 LTS)

  • This server handles all the student files and provides them to the students wherever they sign on to a computer on campus -- their files follow them
  • NTP (time server), provides time for Computer lab computers and servers (see below)

(Linux CentOS 6.4 Server)

  • Provides DNS service (it translates IP addresses to names such as to www.hillside-lausd.net)
    • Provides domain names: hillside-lausd.net & lausd.net
  • Munin Server - Munin is a network/system monitoring application that presents output in graphs through a web interface.
  • Temporary file server, just in case if the student files cannot be saved to the primary file server
  • Software file server (deployed via Samba4 Group Policy)

(Linux CentOS 6.4 Server)

  • NEW AirPrint Server *BETA Testing* - AirPrint allows printing from iPads/iPhones/iPod Touches
  • This server is a Print Server, it is a main access point for printing in the computer lab and also sends print jobs to other printers on campus

(Linux Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 LTS)

  • Primary Backup Server, all server files are backed up to an isolated area in this server

  • Provides Secondary DNS service (it translates IP addresses to names such as to www.hillside-lausd.net)
    • Provides domain names: hillside-lausd.net & lausd.net

(Linux CentOS 6.4 Server)

  • Uses the newly created Samba4 Open Source program which makes it possible for Active Directory integration without the need to purchase a Windows Server. This allows for single-sign-on as well as deploying Group Policies and Software without updating each individual computer
  • Main DNS service (it translates IP addresses to names such as to www.hillside-lausd.net)
    • Provides domain name: hillside-lausd.net
