Messages From LAUSD - Updated 5/7/12Many Changes in 2012-13
There will be many changes at the District in 2012-13; a new homework policy, new alignment of local districts, and many new schools. While each of these has received considerable attention, here and in the media, not so well known but equally important are the changes to the calendar going into effect the end of this year and next. As a result of the arbitrator's ruling last week, we now know that the last day of school for 2011-12 is, June 19. In regards to the opening day of school; you know that family vacation you take every summer? This year, make sure you're back in town before August 14, the new first day of classes across the District. John Deasy, LAUSD Superintendent Hillside Elementary Goes to College!
On Saturday, March 12, 2011, 140 parents and 4th/5th grade students from Hillside ES participated in a Family College Trip to UCLA. The trip consisted of an overview of the A-G Requirements and a field trip to UCLA where tour guides led families through the campus and explained the various programs and activities offered to students. Families also had an opportunity to visit Deneve and Covel Commons as well as Hederick Hall to see firsthand what Dorm life is like. One of the tour guides was a former Hillside ES student who is currently a student at UCLA majoring in History.
The purpose of this event was to show students and families what a university campus looks like as Hillside ES continuously works on promoting college and career-readiness. Inviting parents on this trip was key as we partner with them to help their children succeed.
Upon arrival from this school journey, a parent stated, “This was a great trip, it has really motivated my daughter.”
